Heavy Periods Q & A

What is NovaSure®?

Novasure is a minor medical procedure that removes the endometrium, or the lining of the uterus, to stop excessive menstrual bleeding in premenopausal women.

What are the benefits of NovaSure endometrial ablation?

Have you sometimes changed pads every hour? Has your period lasted almost two weeks? Does it seem as if you're bleeding much of the time? One in five women reports such symptoms. If you have suffered this way, you're seeking a permanent solution.

Once you’ve completed childbearing, or have decided not to have children, NovaSure is a permanent answer to abnormal bleeding during menstruation. You may have tried birth control pills or other hormones to regulate your periods but with little success.

NovaSure eliminates the need for a hysterectomy -- major surgery which always involves risk along with a long recovery period. In contrast, NovaSure is performed once, and you're done! You can go back to work in a day or two. Nine out of ten women who have had NovaSure see a significant reduction in their bleeding.

In addition to the physical benefits, women report many psychological benefits. If you have heavy bleeding, you always carry protection and extra clothing in case of an accident. You may worry excessively about what can happen during work or vacation travel. You may have to give up scheduled activities. Women report that NovaSure frees them from the constant worry and the fear of public embarrassment.

What happens during the NovaSure endometrial ablation procedure?

Dr. Jovanovic opens the cervix slightly and passes a thin mesh wand containing a net into the uterus. The net opens to fit against the endometrium, the uterus lining. Electromagnetic energy comes through the netting for about 90 seconds. The energy, measured exactly, is delivered through the netting for about 90 seconds. Dr. Jovanovic pulls the net which goes back into the wand and removes them.

Are there risks to the NovaSure procedure?

NovaSure is only appropriate if you are sure that your childbearing is complete. Pregnancy after NovaSure can be dangerous. If you have or may have uterine cancer, have an active genital, urinary, or pelvic infection or an IUD, you cannot have the procedure.

Some women report temporary side effects such as mild cramping, nausea, vomiting, discharge, and spotting. There are risks to any medical procedure, but NovaSure is a minimally invasive procedure and has been proven to be safe and effective. Over 2.5 million women have had the NovaSure endometrial ablation. If the choice is between a hysterectomy and an endometrial ablation, the ablation will always be favored, with the risk of complications drastically reduced.
