Why You Should Invest in Laser Hair Removal Before Summer

As you revel in the beauty of nature coming to life around you during springtime, you may want to give a little thought to other growing things, like unwanted body hair. If you’re tired of the daily, weekly, and monthly grind of eliminating hair, laser hair removal offers a wonderfully effective solution.

At Dr. Jovanovic OBGYN & Cosmetic Surgery, we offer our New York City patients the opportunity to throw away their razors and cancel their waxing appointments by permanently removing the hair follicles responsible for unwanted body hair.

And, as you look around at the harbingers of summer, it’s the perfect time to get on the road to smoother skin.

A look at laser

Laser technology isn’t necessarily new, but its applications are expanding as its technology is being refined. One of those refinements has allowed us to use adjustable wavelengths and intensity levels to precisely target skin problems without causing any damage to your surrounding tissue.

In the case of laser hair removal, we direct flashes of light energy into your hair follicles, which absorb the energy as heat, without affecting the surface of your skin. This heat destroys your follicles, and your body takes over and flushes them out through its natural lymphatic system.

It’s all about timing

The reason we bring up laser hair removal before summer is so that you’ll be ready to show off your results during the warmer months. Laser hair removal requires several treatments spaced four weeks apart. The number of treatments depends upon the area you want to target, but you should count on seeing us at least three times if not four or five. We can give you a more specific timeline after our initial consultation.

The explanation for the multiple sessions is that not all of your hair follicles are active at the same time. During your first treatment, we tackle the follicles that are growing hair, but we aren’t able to target your dormant follicles since they aren’t visible. When you come back for your second or third treatment, we methodically target your follicles as they reveal themselves.

We should mention that each session lasts about 15 minutes, and we perform them right in our office. Since there’s no downtime associated with the treatment, you can get in and out and on with your day in hardly any time at all.

Which hair and where?

At our practice, we’ve had great success targeting small areas, such as your underarms, bikini area, and face. These sensitive areas are particularly suited to the precision of laser hair removal, which targets your follicles, not your surrounding skin.

Our laser hair removal system works best on medium to darker-colored hair with some pigment in it. If you have light-colored hair, laser hair removal isn’t a good option (body hair is one area where blondes do have more fun -- or at least less work).

Is it forever?

Yes and no. Our laser system does permanently remove your hair follicles, but this doesn’t mean that new hair follicles can’t come in. Most of our clients enjoy their results for years, however, before this becomes an issue if it becomes one at all.

Every person is different, so it’s hard to predict whether your hair follicles will come back in and to what extent. The good news is that we can tackle any new growth just as easily as we did the first time around.
