Now’s the Time to Tackle Those Pesky Spider Veins

Do you have visible veins on your face or legs? Does the way they look bother you? Spider veins are small web-like veins just under the surface of your facial or leg skin, and varicose veins are large, ropey, twisting veins that usually appear on your legs.

Dr. Jovanovic has helped many patients with both spider veins and varicose veins. That’s right -- you don’t have to keep wearing pants all the time. We can get rid of those unsightly veins

Vein structure

You may imagine your veins like tubes running all through your body, and to some degree, that’s correct. However, there’s more to your veins. Each time your heart beats, it pushes the blood throughout your circulatory system. Your veins’ job is to bring the blood back to your heart again. There are valves located throughout all of your veins. When those valves open and close properly, they keep your blood flowing in the right direction -- back toward your heart.

When valves leak

Over time, for several different reasons, the valves in your veins can become leaky. The vast majority of the time, you don’t have any major risks because of leaky valves, but you may well develop spider veins or varicose veins

When the valves leak, the blood pools up, producing visible veins. In small blood vessels, the pooling causes the veins to turn reddish and you have tiny spider veins. In larger blood vessels, you get the twisting, bulging, bluish varicose veins.

Goodbye, ugly veins!

There are ways to get rid of spider and varicose veins. The one that’s most appropriate for you depends on different factors. Dr. Jovanovic makes treatment recommendations based on your specific situation, but some of the more common vein treatments include:

Each of these treatments involves closing or removing the problematic vein. Once the veins are closed, the blood stops flowing to them and your spider or varicose veins fade and disappear.

Before suggesting a treatment for you, Dr. Jovanovic uses ultrasound technology to examine your vascular system to determine the exact cause of your problem. Understanding your problem and making sure there are no hidden risks is critical for a good outcome.

If you’re ready for a more comfortable and self-assured summer, schedule your appointment with Dr. Jovanovic today. You don’t have to live with bulging, ugly veins. You can wear shorts with confidence.
